In February this year we wanted to see some classic action & adventure movies. I invited my friends to watch Star Wars in the Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North & IMAX.
I bought tickets for the screening online, but the cinema requires you to collect them 15 minutes before the start of the film. One of the people who stood in the line started screaming loudly that she had changed her place in the cinema without her consent.
I ran to the IMAX screening room and explained the whole situation to the cinema staff. They suggested going to the security office but as we were standing outside the screening room one of them started to yell at us, “You can’t do that. We are screening Star Wars in IMAX and you are disturbing everyone’s experience.”
So I pointed that this was nothing but a mistake & apologized for causing the disturbance. They let us in to wait for our “spot”. But the lady continued her screaming.
When the film started I could feel an uncomfortable atmosphere in the room. One of the ushers finally told us to be seated or left out entirely. But before leaving the theater, the lady started another ruckus, so we went back. That time there was nothing in the cinema Just the woman, some guys and other strangers laughing at her.
At the end when the credits started rolling, I saw her standing on the lobby, looking straight into the mirror at me! We all were so embarrassed. I tried explaining to her but she wouldn’t listen. Instead she started shouting with both her friends, “I’m not done with this movie! I’m going to the next show!” It was then that I realized, they had seen the whole movie!
Now I love women… who love themselves even if it means being a victim of sexual assault. And I love to see them happy after realizing what happened. I feel if she had done something similar, like come on to me in the movie, then I would had been in love with her (which I’m sure she didn’t have any clue).
But to see her so happy and smiling in the mirror, it gave me a glimpse of what life is like for her on a daily basis. The world would no longer be able to get the idea that what she has been through is just a movie. Even when she saw the movie, it only gave her more strength in fighting and living against the things that would happen. In this small world that she lives in, it seems like she could have been another victim.
But to be able to overcome these things and be happy is the real lesson.
